The 'Tour De Cure' orginated from a chat on the bike during a winter spin between 2 friends in 2008. What followed in May 2009 was the first event of its kind in East Cork and it was a major success with the help and association of one of Irelands greatest ever sportstars, Stephen Roche, winner of the Tour De France, Tour of Italy and the Cycling World Championships. 568 riders took part in the ride having a choice of 3 circuits of varying distances. Cancer Care and Diabetes were the leading illness's which the Tour De Cure aided in its first year and the breakdown is available as there were some others. The event, slightly larger in its 2nd Year took place on Saturday May 8th, 2010 with the objective of putting bums on saddles, smiles on faces and some euros in 3 charities selected for 2010. These were the Cope Foundation for persons intellectually disabled, the Mercy Hospital Cancer Foundation and Anaphylaxis Ireland. Well over 1,200 took part. In 2011, the Event will take place on Sat May 14th and plans to be another notch higher in standards.
