History: The 'Tour De Cure' orginated from a chat on the bike during a winter spin between 2 friends in 2008. What followed in May 2009 was the first event of its kind in East Cork and it was a major success with the help and association of one of Irelands greatest ever sportstars, Stephen Roche, winner of the Tour De France, Tour of Italy and the Cycling World Championships in 1987. The organisers now have a great team of 50 - 60 people to help with 2011 event and again fantastic corporate sponsors and private local businesses.
568 riders took part in this first year, having a choice of 3 circuits of varying distances. Multiple Cancer Care Charities and the National Diabetes Federation benefited in that year. The event, slightly larger in its 2nd Year took place on Saturday May 8th, 2010 and 1,200 - 1,400 participated. The charities in 2010 selected to benefit were Cope Foundation for persons intellectually disabled, the Mercy Hospital Cancer Foundation and Anaphylaxis Ireland. In 2011, Cope Foundation and the Mercy Hospital Foundation again benefited along with the Midleton First Response Unit and 1800 cyclists took part.
The event takes place in 2012 on May 13th Sunday and the same charities from 2011 have been selected.
